When are the UK or European Governments going to fine the likes of Mercedes Benz who conn the public with their fuel consumption statistics.
Merc are the worst offender, E220cdi - they state 61.4mpg and what you get is mid 40's at best.

No, the worst offenders are Fiat with the Twinair and Ford's Ecoboost.
Both get around 60-70% of quoted figures.
It would be interesting to know if the CO2 levels are even accurate.0 -
I can't answer as no question has been asked.0

I had a C220cdi and I was getting 64 mpg when it was 10 years old.0 -

What you actually mean is the they are UNDERSTATING the fuel consumption.
Just to be clear.
And all cars from all manufacturers are put through a standard test. This is just a representative number to compare against other cars. Not a number to be expected in real life all the time.
Sorry you fell for it.0 -

Thing is you drive it as it came out the showroom and not the way their tests were conducted.0 -
The tests are set by the EU. Mercedes have nothing to do with it. I used to work for Mercedes and we had two customers who both had E220's and were having a competition to see who could get the best. Both were returning mid 70's to the gallon.
I would suggest you have a heavy right foot......0 -

OPs right, they are OVERSTATING.
Hence the following fines.
The manufacturers do all sorts of things to increase the figures in the tests such as taping up vents and gaps, removing the alternator and pushing the brake pads back to reduce friction.0 -
Honest John is a good place to check out real life MPG.

Sidetracking into pedantry here but the OP (and you) are wrong, sinizterguy is right.
The OP said they're overstating fuel consumption, which means they're saying the cars use more fuel than they do in reality, and is clearly not what he meant.
If he'd said they're overstating mpg then he (and you) would be right but he didn't, so you're not.0 -
Is it not overstating the mpg, not consumption?0
