How much to unblock fireplace?

Our fireplace has been bricked up, and I'm thinking about getting it unblocked, but only to have as a feature not to use as an open fire. Should this be a relatively cheap job if not interfering with chimney/flue etc? Any idea how much I should expect to pay? Thanks ps. In Bristol area

    Is there anything there now?

You can do this in a morning easily, then just get a plastering to plaster it!

If you are just having it as a feature, not putting any kind of gas/coal fire in it, it is fairly straight forward and a competent DIYer should be able to do it themselves. Just knock the plaster off the wall in the vicinity and follow the lines of where the new blockwork/bricks run. Just ensure that there is still a lintel in place above the opening.

Also take into account, unless you block up the flue, you will end up with loads of soot coming down and a decent cold breeze.

If you are not up to doing this, a builder/labourer could do it for you, but expect to pay upwards of £100 for the job, depending on location. More if you want it all plastering
  • take a look here. any competent DIYyer could do this:
