    It sounds as though you've been having a rough time Beanie.
    Hope whatever was going on behind the scenes has been sorted out.
    Have you got one of those magnet things on the extending stick?  Might be worth using it under the furniture, near skirting boards etc ( as long as you can do it sitting down))  Also as @maggiem said, check any magnetic charges as it's possible the cats have moved it from where it fell so it could be any room.

    - When bought house £315,995 mortgage debt and end date at start = October 2039 - now £216,847
    - OPs to mortgage = £18,925 Estd. interest saved = £9,670 to date
    c. 16 months reduction in term
