I'm still baffled how people can follow thousands of people yet not have their twitter feed overwhelmed with tweets. I've come across this site which describes how to arrange followers into lists. However, I guess the main default list won't be affected by this?

I'm more baffled as to why so many people would have even the slightest bit of interest in following celebrities.
Justin Bieber for example has well over 50 million followers. Are people really so sad that they want to know every move and fart that he makes?

I'm just as puzzled why people want to tell everyone about every move and fart they make.

I wouldn't have time, and certainly don't have the inclination.
