Most frozen chicken is cheap because it is injected with pork or beef protein and water (link).A examination of frozen chicken fillets sold in the North of England found that some products imported from the Netherlands contained as much as 35 per cent water even though the meat content was described as 80 per cent. The suspected chicken was destined for the catering industry, and is believed to have been used in takeaway restaurants, care homes and canteens.0

I rarely buy chicken portions - much better economics to buy a whole bird. I go for free range, so it would be too expensive to buy breast fillets.0

Frozen ones I defrost before cooking, same as if I bought fresh and frozen it myself would defrost first.
Like I also said it depends what quality you are happy with, we've all seen the media reports etc but if you're happy with value ones and it fits your budget then that is a personal choice.
The ones listed in that report I believe came from the same suppliers a restaurant I worked for used as they were from the Netherlands and did have a high water content. From what I remember the value Tesco ones when I bought them were ok, a friend who doesn't eat pork buys them so I pressume they don't have any in.
Found the Somerfield leaflet, big advert chicken breast fillets half price now £3 instead of £6 for a 520g pack, which works out at £5.77 a kilo, so therefore when not on 'offer' £11.54 a kilo, :rotfl: makes me laugh. One day I might be more organised...........
GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb0 -
LOL - when I saw this thread title I wondered if it was something to do with those things you stuff your bra with
Have you thought about buying from a proper butcher? It will be more expensive than supermarket value/BOGOF but will certainly be tastier.
I agree with jennybb - I rarely buy chicken other than "whole" as it's much better value for money. I only buy "pieces" if I'm in a supermarket and they have decent quality stuff on reduced to clear.Operation Get in Shape
