Carpet Right - 3rd party fitters

We just brought a carpet from Carpet Right, they asked if we wanted them to fit it and we said yes, we paid a deposit, £250 for the carpet and £9.50 for the fitter and were told we had to pay the residue of £67 to the fitter once the carpet was fitted. Having just paid a lot of money for a new fitted bedroom, I was concerned about any damage that might/may happen but was happy in the knowledge that we had a carpet fitter from Carpet Right! WRONG.....

The carpet was fitted yesterday and prior to them leaving we popped up and checked the carpet, I asked the fitter for his name and number but he refused to give it to me, stating that it would be seen as soliciting and that Carpet Right did not allow them to do this. I paid the fitter, no receipt was given and they left, went to hoover new carpet only to discover that they had dragged the carpet across the corner of my new fitted units damaging the corners of two units, I did not see this until they had gone, and to be honest I never thought of the tops being damaged...

Phoned Carpet Right, spoke to manager, who said the fitters are nothing to do with them, read your receipt! It states that the fitters are 3rd party, and that they are responsible for any damage caused, not CR, but said I could write a letter in with a photo of the damage - Why ask me to do that?

I phoned CAB who tell me that no matter if CR took a deposit from me for the fitter, I paid him in cash when he had completed the job - so it was like me just grabbing someone off the street to fit my carpet.

I asked the manager of CR for their name and number, point blank refused to give it to me, as did the fitter... instead the manager said he would call them and ask them to come back to the house. Later that afternoon, after having no call from the fitters to say when they would come back I phoned CR again, and was told they will come today to have a look, he told me the fitters are covered by insurance, I asked him for their number in case I have to go out, NO will not give me their number, but did tell me their christian and surname.

I am astounded that CR state that these fitters are nothing to do with them, when they take a deposit for the work, why do they not point out when you are buying the carpet that they are nothing to do with CR.

CAB state that we do not have a leg to stand on.... unless we can get the name and address of the fitter we could pursue this is court. I know that they have not even been to have a look at the damage yet, but at the moment, they are shielded by CR - and as I do not have any details apart from a name, if they do not come back I am left with damaged furniture which I will have to pay to replace..

Just wondered if anyone else has had this problem?

Carpet Right record the Insurance details of all of their carpet fitters.

If you press them they will lean on their carpet fitter, it may need you to contact head office and / or use social media.

You probably didn't pay a deposit for the fitter. The £9.50 sounds just about the price they charge for the room separator bar that goes in the doorway.

I too have thought their practice is a bit dodgy in the past. They have big posters up advertising the fitting, and unless you press them they often haven't volunteered the fact the fitters are nothing to do with them.

The two times I have used them I've been lucky enough to get fitters that have done a great job, and the latest time the fitter happily gave me his contact card. I wouldn't be surprised if yours would have too if he hadn't damaged the units.
  • Carpet fitting seems expensive in Hampshire it's £30 round our way.

I too would pressurise them, but have also found that we got a fitter's contacts directly, we used him to do the rest of the house!!, they can normally supply carpets for you at a much cheaper cost. CR and other large carpet shops use the same dodgy marketing practices as certain sofa shops - independents are far more trustworthy

Good luck with leaning on CR

And it's always cash in hand to the fitters. I suspect not many tax returns are filed
