Samsung Chromebook Help !!

Hi,

I have just received a Samsung Chromebook and just cannot get on the internet to sync my Google account. My last Samsung Chromebook just worked out of the box, ie switched on, it found my home wifi, I logged into Google and away I went.

This time, I just cannot get internet, despite the fact it says that the wifi is connected to my home network.

One thing I have noticed is that when I view the connection on my BT HomeHub5 management page, I see that the wifi encryption is WPA2, however, when I examine the network details on the chromebook, it says the security is RSN.

I am thinking this may be the problem, but I cannot find any way to change this or resolve the problem. Also, I imagine the brand new Chromebook has been lying in its box in the warehouse for the last few months, and on opening and connecting to my home newtwork over wifi the first time, there was no updating as it obviously could not get internet.

Should I have logged on as Guest first to at least get the updates?, and would "Powerwashing" and starting again be an idea.

Any help appreciated as this has me truly stumped!

  • I have just "Powerwashed" and reset to factory settings and tried again. This is what happens:

Switch on and Welcome screen comes up - I set the settings to English- UK, then down to "UK Keyboard". I then detect my home network BTHub5 - ****, and press "Continue".

The Chrome OS T&C page comes up and I "Accept and Continue".

A page comes up saying "Chrome updates automatically so you always have the freshest version" - Checking for Updates (the wheel goes round for about 30 seconds"

The sign in page comes up but when I try to add the "ampersand" (@) for the Google email address, the @ shows as ", meaning that the keyboard is still defaulted as a US keyboard and not the UK keyboard as per the initial welcome screen.

Nevertheless, I add the email address and password but a box comes up with a small black dinosaur image that says "Network not available".

This page stays for about 30 seconds then changes back to the "Sign-in "page.

    I can go no further.

You certainly want to be entering a WPA2 password on your Chromebook at some point along the way there. Only other advice I can give is to try changing the wireless channel (log into BT router) as devices can be fussy sometimes...

Thats the thing. The password was entered via the Welcome screen, that is why I can see it is connected. I will try and alter the wireless channel, although I have been in there but could not see anything specific. The funny thing is ,my wife runs her Chromebook off the home network and had absolutely no problem setting it up....so confused!

I intend getting a Chromebook in the next few weeks too. Am I likely to have problems connecting with a mobile broadband dongle?
BTW, & is an ampersand; I don't know if @ has a specific name.

Kernal Sanders - are you talking about plugging the dongle into the USB port? If so, yes you will run into problems. Has someone written Chrome drivers for the dongle is the problem! What you should be doing is buying a 3G/4G Chromebook. The 'dongle' is then built in. Otherwise, if you use your phone as hotspot, it'll just look like a Wifi router to the Chromebook, which is far handier than using a dongle IMO. Make sure you know the cost/limit of your data!
