Laptop Display Gone Pale

It is a Toshiba L650 using Windows7. The screen has gone pale which makes it difficult to see some things on web pages or Gmail. I think the colours are OK and seem quite strong but greyed out text looks very pale. Boxes on Gmail to select emails or mark them with stars are invisible but there. You can find them by moving the mouse and watching the pointer change but it is very annoying to use.
I assume I have somehow changed a setting to cause this. Any suggestions on what I can try to put it back please?

Update on this. On turning on this morning it is all back to normal.
The only difference yesterday was that it had been running for about 36 hours continuously - it is plugged in and used as my main computer. Surely it can't be overheating as the room is not very warm.
Fingers crossed it will carry on OK now.0
