Paypal as a direct debit

I need to set up 2 direct debits to benefit from the Halifax and Santander accounts. I read that Paypal could be used as a direct debit.
Under the direct debit section of Paypal I have linked my bank account. But now what? There doesn't seem to be any options to control the amount that's taken out or the frequency.
Also, how safe is using Paypal as a direct debit. If my Paypal details fell into evil hands, would they have access to all the money in my bank account?
I know there is this link for setting up a Paypal secure key, but it doesn't seem to go anywhere: https://www.paypal.com/uk/securitykey/
I've tried search for information, but not found anything concrete, so I would appreciate any help.

Why bother with PayPal when you can simply open two different Tesco savings accounts that will allow you to satisfy any bank account that requires two different direct debit mandates to be set up?
Simply open a Tesco Internet Saver account and then open a Tesco Instant Access account and you can setup direct debits to yourself using each of the Tesco accounts to pull say £1 a month each from the HBOS and Santander accounts you have.0 -
You have to pull the money manually, there is no option for automatic DDs at Paypal.0

Thanks! This sounds more safer than the Paypal one. I had already open a post office account, but I think I will open Tesco as well.

The Tesco account/s is/are far better than any others because you can use it to pull money from umpteen other accounts where there is a requirement for those accounts to have direct debit mandates set up on them.littly_kitty wrote: »Thanks!
