I'm wondering what sort of fitting is at the bottom of your downpipe. Is it possible that the suction caused by the water coming down the pipe is causing air to be sucked through the water in the s bend trap and this sounds like dripping? I would check out that fitting carefully and get on the old marygolds and clean out any gunge you find.
  • Put a board under the area you believe the dripping sound is coming from in the loft area cover with talc leave in place when it rains if its coming in you will see marks in talc etc where it drops if none are seen move the board along until whole roof is area is covered if no marks appear no waters getting in

Some years ago a client phoned saying he had water running down the wall on the top floor of his four floor town house near Hyde Park. Bit perplexed as I knew there was no water supply/toilets etc on that floor just a family room with huge TV. Visiting the site ,he did indeed have quite a small waterfall running down the wall and continuing down the staircase to the ground floor. The family were still sitting watching TV!!!!
Only explanation, must be from the flat roof. On climbing out of a window and onto the parapet,I was younger and not so bright then, I was confronted with a swimming pool of rainwater about 15 inches deep nicely kept in by the parapet wall. Blossom from a neighbours tree had collected and blocked the wire cages over the down pipes. On clearing the blockage it was like watching a whirlpool as the water drained away. Very hairy climbing back down,no thanks, and a redecorating job resulted. Family still watched the TV.
When working on sites in The West End for 10 years and commuting from the South Coast each week, Monday to Friday, I found these problems always occurred on a Friday afternoon.
