Even with a contract phone or even a pay monthly phone you can still end up with a massive bill despite having allowances.
This is because calls to certain numbers will use credit rather than inclusive minutes and some data usage may be outide of the inclusive package. It's no good setting a credit limit as the mobile phone companies havent got a real time system so you run up the bill before they or you know. These boards have many posts on the nightmares associated with this for you to read. I would always recommend a PAYG for youngsters. They are more expensive but you retain control of the bill.
  • Thanks will have a read
  • With an 11 year old, I certainly wouldn't go for a contract phone unless you want to be slapped with a massive bill when something goes wrong.

Why not buy a basic phone and get a Giffgaff sim for whatever bundle you feel would be suitable for him, ie £5, £7.50, etc. And that would be your total commitment with no unpleasant surprises.
