Mother in law duped by phone call about computer infection

Hi All,
I'm hoping someone can help. My wife has just told me that her Mum has been on the phone to someone who claimed that her computer was infected and she has allowed them to access her computer.
As far as I'm aware she only uses the computer for emails, she definitely doesn't internet bank nor shops online so I don't think there would be any ID theft. Until I view her internet and email history I can't be sure.
Apart from alerting the police I need to get the computer sorted. I was going to take it offline then search to see if I could see what files and websites had be visited to see what had been changed, then do a Factory restore to take it back to its original state then finally run a malware/virus check.
Is there anything else that needs to be done?? I know the above is very vague but I'm hoping this will be enough information?
Many thanks
