I had a route last year of around 600 houses which payed me £60. However, the houses were all very local to me and I live in an urban area so it was fairly simple. It took me longer than it should because I hadn't planned it properly but when I do it again I would probably be looking at around five hours work which makes it cost effective.

My advice is to find out what routes are available and how much they are paying before committing to anything.

  • Obviously a rural round with 1 house every mile with potholed mud tracks between will be bad and seem not worth it. But if you live in a town you could easily knock 100 books out around a small housing estate in half an hour.

Wow, that's going some, Lee:eek:. I doubt anyone could do 100 in half an hour on their own wherever it is. Have you done it?

They pay an extra allowance for rural routes but how they decide on the paltry amount is a total mystery:rotfl: Every year I add a detailed run-down of hours taken and miles covered(as they request) but the extra amount given the next year is always the same:mad:

I also deliver Thomson Local directories (not in our area as its rural, we don't get them here:() but in the nearest big town. They are a doddle....small books, you can carry dozens in a shopping bag/small trolly with no problem, row upon row of town streets, no driveways etc. Bliss. Admittedly I have to drive to get to the area in the first place but I have to go to that town anyway a couple of times a week for shopping so I just rearrange my schedule. It's still worth it moneywise.
