I am currently commuting 2 hr 30 to work then the same back again. Its madness since I live in a city centre and there are loads of jobs.. Driving me to near insanity......

Yet I am here wasting times on these forums, eating junk to distract me as opposed to finishing up my covering letter for a particular role and finalizing my CV. What on earth is wrong with me ? =(

Personally I wouldn't commute more than half an hour each way (unless it was for a short period).

2.5 hours each way daily. No chance, life is too short to spend it sitting in traffic every day.

Same here, I've never really had to commute more than five or six miles in 17 years of full time work. There was one period where my job moved 20 miles away and I agreed to hand over to the person who would be taking over. That involved three months of an hour and a quarter's commute each way but the company paid me well over the odds to do it and on reduced hours so I accepted it.

No way would I be wasting 1hr 30 or more travelling for work every day! Current commute is 20 mins on the motorbike, 25 in the car or 35 cycling, that'll do for me!

25 minutes by car into the City would increase my rent about 6 fold to what I pay at the moment. Plus I dont waste it, I sleep :D

The first job I ever did after graduation involved a 90 minute commute each way on public transport. I lasted a year before quitting. The commute was affecting my morale which was in turn affecting my performance.

I took a pay cut for my next job but it was only a 15 minute walk from where I lived. Totally worth it!

Is this too far? How far have you commuted to work? Was it sustainable? Did it have an effect on your family?

Like you I live in Birmingham, I have commuted to my job in London since 2009 and drive up and down the M40 every day - 260 miles a day.

Anything is achievable if you put your mind to it and enjoy it.

Blimey 260 miles every day? Your fuel costs must be enormous.
  • Took 1 hour 20 on the way down, Friday traffic mid afternoon.

Took 2 hours on the way back, Friday rush hour with 50 restriction mostly on the M1.

Overall not too bad, I think I could do it.

2nd interview on Friday and I am due there in the morning so I will be able to see what time I would need to leave the house and the traffic conditions on the way down.

It sounds a long commute, i wouldn't want to do it. But a few weeks ago i went to sign-on for Jsa for the first time and was told i'd be expecting to apply for jobs that are 90mins away even if they were zero hours on minimum pay.

If it is your dream job and has career potential then it is a bit of a no brainer.

In the short term it's worth the extra effort -in the long term you can consider moving closer.

I used to commute by train and tube about and hour and twenty each way and it was astounding how many people thought that was too much - so I think it's very subjective. Some people couldn't imagine working any further away than their home town.
