California car hire - USSA Member discounts

Hi,

I am intending to hire a car from 4th - 23rd August 2015 in San Francisco, we have drivers aged 25, 24, 24 and 23.

Reading online I seen if you became a USSA member I could avoid the young driver fees as these were working out in the region of $450.

I joined this and have seen the discounted rate upon hiring a car and it is quite significant, does anyone know if I have to do anything else or will I asked anything upon arriving at the rental desk?

I have literally only signed up to USSA and have no banking or anything with them.

Thanks for your help.

  • I'm not sure who or what USAA is. But if you have booked your car through almost any USA based web site or organisation then you probably have not got insurance as part of the package. So you will have to buy this locally when you collect the car. It's going to cost around $35 per day plus tax.

Book through a UK based site and insurance is usually included.

    Wikipedia lists several possibilities: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USSA
FWIW as young drivers are involved, my guess would be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Student_Association

    I am with Christine.

Be very careful if you have booked through a USA website (your post suggests you have) re insurances.

Much better to go through a UK broker or direct with the car hire company (UK site)

In addition, you might also have to pay sales tax locally.

I haven't booked anything yet, wanted to seek advice before doing so. Think I will book using a UK site, don't want to end up paying a fortune in insurance over there.

    Thanks everyone!
