........ I'm not sure why I would want to supply this information (e.g. concerns about identity theft).

as you said you supplied this information 6 months ago isn't it a bit late to have concerns about it?
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....
  • When I was working for Lloyds Banking Group we used a system called URU which meant exactly that.

We typed the customers driving licence number or some details from their passport into the system and the result told us whether the details were valid or not.

I assume your bank has a similar system.

    I know what you mean.

However, they originally asked for the passport number on the formal application form.

A few days ago I just got a letter out of the blue asking for the driving licence and passport numbers (again) which prompted the concerns now (especially as I only just got a new passport just over a week ago) and I thought I'd investigate before handing over the new info.

This could explain their request, as they will know that your old passport expired.

think you've answered your own question with this new information !
or it could be coincidence (but I doubt it)

Or the bank is conducting a thorough review. 1 in 10 employees at HSBC are now employed in some form of regulatory compliance. That's 25,000 people across the globe. Cheaper to employ people to do a proper job rather than incur fines.
