Balance transfer from Amex to Santander

So confused - I phoned Santander a few weeks ago to do a balance transfer from my Amex. They said I needed to get a sort code and account number from American Express which I did.
I've just phoned them up and now they're saying they don't do transfers from American Express and are refusing to process the transfer, even though the previous person I spoke to said they could do it once I had the other details.
Anyone else had any experience with this?

The 15 digit Amex number does often cause problems with BTs.0

Yes - I've read a few threads about it but I was specifically told by Santander I could do it if I gave them the generic sort code and account number and now they are refusing to do it. I just spent a bit extra on my Amex too so I could get this all transferred onto my 0% card and now this has thrown a right spanner in the works.....0 -

Seems like the first person you spoke to was willing to, and knew how to, push it through the system manually.
Send a secure message or a letter explaining the problem.
Emails and letters tend to get passed around the system until they find someone who understands and can act.0 -
Thanks. I've written a secure message. I spoke to a manager earlier who said that they would look into who told me they could do it first time around and make sure that person was told that they wouldn't do balance transfers from Amex. I politely suggested that they might also want to tell their customers this too!0

Is it an AmEx credit card or charge card? Certainly there have been other threads of people saying they are refused transfers from chargecards but credit cards are ok0

It's a credit card. It's just confusing being given mixed messages by Santander. I could transfer it onto my 0% barclaycard if I want to but the BT fee with Santander is 1% less and I've got a few weeks to get this sorted with them so I'd rather do this.0

Got a response from Santander saying they won't do the balance transfer from an Amex and spouting the "recent policy change" that they mentioned before on the phone. I've just bitten the bullet and gone with barclays even though the fee is about £20 higher. Thanks everyone for your input.0

they ought to have been able to have done the BT, and certainly have done in the past. for a BT they shouldn't have needed the Sort Code and Account Number from you, either0
