    So use another company .....who will have exactly the same booking conditions when you use a low cost carrier.......

    Free market- your choice but maybe insurance might be a useful purchase at the time of booking next time regardless of who you book with......and avoid the whole scenario of trying to recoup cancellation charges when you are on a non changeable cheap ticket.

    I wonder if you could have made a name change on ryanair and easyjet yourself, or bought a new flight depending on what was cheaper. Then, provided the lead person on the booking was still going on holiday, there would have been no need to contact ONB.

    This isn't a 'name change' it's a passenger change.

    Fees are there to prevent agents (or speculators) buying the cheapest tickets on popular routes and then selling them off at a profit.

    Expensive way to learn why you should get insurance when you book though ! Holiday insurance costs exactly the same if you take it nine months before the holiday or nine minutes before so there is no moneysaving value in waiting and foregoing the cancellation side of a policy.


    This doesn't apply to me as I have an annual policy but could you clarify what you mean? Many people only take out insurance for when they'll be away on the actual holiday itself, so perhaps for 7 or 14 days. If they took it out (to use your example) 9 months before to cover any illness/accident that stopped them going on the holiday wouldn't it cost more. Just curious.:)

    Not normally. You are still only paying for two weeks cover, but anything which happened up to the two weeks which would prevent you from travelling would also be covered.

    I'm not sure I can explain easily in text :(

    malkie has it right. If I buy single trip travel insurance today for a trip in 9 months time, then it will cover me for any health reasons or likewise that occur between purchasing the policy and the holiday starting.

    If you buy annual it covers you from the day you buy it for 12 months so I'd need to start it today, and not the date I travel.

    Though the annual cover is an example of when it doesn't cost the same price regardless of when you buy it.

    I have annual cover from Nationwide and I tend to play with when I add the premium extras (such as worldwide cover) so I can get them to cover as many of my holidays as possible in one payment. Some people on here will chastise me for not having 24/7/365 cover but it works for me. Insurance is a form of gambling after all, and my gambling has worked out so far!
