Faulty E reader

I bought an E reader 2 years ago as a christmas present to myself. I have used it approximately 4 times, usually when I go on holiday. Recently while packing for holiday I charged it as usual but it did not turn on. I contacted the manufacturer for advice and they said it was probably the charger and they would send me another one free of charge. I waited 4 months but eventually it did arrive. Unfortunately this did not help and the e reader still would not turn on. I again contacted the manufacturer who advised me to buy a universal charger from any retailer. I told them I was not happy to do this as I did not think it was the charger and could I send the e reader back to them for repair. I have now been told by them that they do not have a repair department and I am only entitled to a replacement if it is still in warranty which it is not......any advice on how to proceed, if at all, would be gratefully accepted. THANKS X:(

How much did you pay for it? How has it been stored between uses?
It's really not good for batteries to be left for long periods without being used and it is perfectly normal for them to stop working altogether if they are not regularly charged and discharged.
They can be left for longer periods but only if they are charged to between 20% and 80% and still need to be checked regularly to make sure they are still working.0 -
You bought yourself an E reader during christmas and used it approximately 4 times in 2 years?! Talk about a waste of money! haha
That aside, the amount of time you have used it has no bearing on the issue. It is all down to how long you have used it for.
If the item is out of warranty then anything the manufacturer offers is above and beyond what they need to do (unless in extreme circumstances)
You should, however, have Sales of Goods rights against the RETAILER and this covers you up to 6 years after purchase. Because you've had more than 6 months use then the retailer doesn't have to do anything UNLESS you can prove that it was inherently faulty (ie you didn't drop it, or read it in the shower, or something like that). You'll probably need a fault report stating that it is inherent.
1. Contact retailer and mention a sales of goods act return due to the item being faulty
2. If they refuse or request a fault report then go get one at a local engineer shop place
3. The retailer will need to remedy the situation by either partially refunding, repairing or replacing the item (as long as it was inherently faulty)0 -
What often happens is that when goods are unused for a long time, the battery discharges deeply, and they need a kind of factory reset to come good. On android tablets, often it's a case of holding down the power and volume down keys (or other combination, search the web for your device) for 20s. Indeed on a moto g phone, it's vol dn and power for 2 whole minutes to get some kind of response, even whilst plugged in. By finding the right combinations and charging for a couple of hours before starting, I rescued an Acer netbook, a nexus 7 and a moto g who appeared to be permanently borked and are now all as good as new.0

Yep.
I had a Sony eReader and if it wasn't used for a while it was a nightmare to bring back to life. A complex factory reset procedure needed to be done 2 or 3 times and then finally it would splutter back on and start charging.0 -
I have a nook, after an update it wouldn't turn on and I thought it was broken, I had to let the battery go flat and then recharge again to get it working0
