Does car insurance cease with the death of the keeper.

The system is just not set up for deaths, in my view.
If the widow notifies the insurers and cancels the insurance, to get a refund, the DVLA will issue a fine for the car having no insurance! Also, to whom does the insurer issue the cheque, and will they use data protection as an excuse to not talk with anybody.
Maybe the insurer will allow adding a named driver? Yet again, with the policy holder dead, who has the authority to make the request?
You can buy short term bridging insurance through brokers.
I think there are websites, but I have no idea which one is fake or real.
Insurers deal with their policyholders dying day in day out.
The widow or a representative will typically call the Insurer who will often request a photocopy of the death certificate. Most Insurers will change the name of the policy holder to "The executor of the late Mr Bloggs". Also most Insurers will allow a period for the estate to deal with the car eg sell it or pass it to a family member. If the widow is a driver on the policy it is common for Insurers to transfer their name as the policyholder along with any accrued No claims Bonus.0 -

If it's SORN, how does the friend drive it from A to B as requested?
Also, for selling purposes, as requested by the widow, it will be test driven, whilst being SORN?0 -

^^^^^ This.
My father died last year. My mother was a named driver. I was his executor. I spoke to the insurance company and they did exactly as dacouch describes.0 -

if you are happy to handle the car on behalf of the widow then offer to deal with the insurance and notifications to DVLA. Might also need a death certificate.
(one side issue is intermeddling so you need to know who is the administrator and get their agreement to deal with the sale, safekeeping is fine).
Once you have the insurance and licence the widow can forget it and at some point when sold the cash can go to the estate.
If you don't want the hassle of a private sale trade may be the way to go depends what its worth.0 -
It turned out that the widow was a named driver and the insurance company have put it into her name and added my husband as an additional driver. DVLA have been informed.
The car is now at our house and will be sold once the funeral is over.
So, I thank you all for your advice and for taking the time to answer my queries during a very sensitive time.0 -
