Online check in upgrade?

It's suggested in the tips to speak nicely when checking in (always have done anyway - that's just manners). As we'll be flying on a 'big' birthday and anniversary, it's probably the closest we'll ever get to any possibility of an upgrade. With everything online these days, where is the chance to persuade someone it's worth upgrading us?

Yes, I know pigs might fly and all that. :rotfl: I'm not anticipating it, but it would be a welcome bonus. :)
. . .I did not speak out

Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me..

It's extremely unlikely. No point getting your hopes elevated in the slightest.

you don't mention the airline but non-US airlines tend to only upgrade for free if they need to for operational reasons. eg economy is overbooked. Even then they may target those travelling alone or those with status with the airline. You may be offered paid upgrade at the airport (or online with some airlines), if you mention route and airline, someone may be able to give you an indication of what this might be

If you have no status with the airline then you'd have more chance picking this week's lottery numbers. When airlines do need to upgrade people for operational reasons (such as overbooking) then it is their frequent fliers who get picked first. Upgrade for non-operational reasons (birthdays, honeymoon etc) almost never happen.

As said above, not much chance without airline status or knowing someone at the airline (and even that doesn't help very often). Also, as I learned when getting an upgrade several years ago with my vegetarian wife, even less chance if you have any special meal requests on the booking.

Which airline and destination? Are you registered on their frequent flier programme, even with lowly status?

Thanks, everyone. It's BA (have joined executive club) and the flight in question would be LA to Heathrow. I'm not anticipating an upgrade, so not getting hopes up.

gfplux, we won't be scruffs, though not all dressed up. Of course we're polite!

If you're booked on an A380 service perhaps consider paying for the better seats on the upper deck, see seatguru for advice.

I have had one free upgrade on BA longhaul from WT+ to CW. Economy was way overbooked so they were moving people from WT to WT+ and from WT+ to CW. I was travelling alone (well with a colleague on a separate booking) and am a BA Gold card holder. (had originally tried to upgrade with Avios as I did on the outbound flight but there was no availability)
Upgrades from WT to WT+ may be offered at the airport for around £230 each (if offered at all)

BA generally only upgrade when they are overbooked, and on LAX-LHR there are likely to be a lot of exec club members with status. I have been upgraded on the LA route before, but I'm Gold GL with BA and my upgrades are usually when travelling alone. Still, you never know, wish you luck.
