in Phones & TV
We're with TalkTalk at the minute and it's coming near to renewal time.
We'll likely stay with them for now because the renewal price is right, the service is fine and there's no traffic shaping on our unlimited download package.
From what I can see, YouView is part of the broadband/phone package.
1: Does anyone know if we have to install and connect/use YouView?
I can't see anything in T&Cs saying we have to
2: Is there an ISP that will customise a better deal for what we want?
That's up to 16mb speed, unlimited usage and anytime calls.
**Please read the following before you help**
We don't have an aerial and won't be installing one, so Freeview/YouView are not selling points.
We have FreeSat and an old Sky box (with free channels only) for our TV. We don't watch sports, we're not slaves to the TV, and there's no young uns so we don't need movie channels, US drama, lifestyle nonsense, kids channels....you get the idea.
We have an anytime call boost because we still use our landline whenever we want.
Fibre/Superfast isn't available yet.
Any thoughts welcomed.
Cheers.

i dont believe the youview is a must (wasn't when we signed up) so could see no issue of you not connecting. That being said you want to make sure if its something your not going to use that you dont actually get a package with it as it'll be a waste of moneyEveryones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0

I see a basic Broadband option but not in "My Account" section.
I suppose it's on to customer services...0 -

best of luck lol, talktalk has the worlds worst customer services!!!
Deffo dont pay for it though if its not something you will use, they are just upselling.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
the freeview box consists of 2 parts ,
1: using an external ariel it becomes a freeviw box and allows you the repeat dross
2: connected to your network , it becomes a machine for paying talk talk to watch films and the occasional youtube (I think) bits
mine has been sat here (free one without a hard drive) for 3 months0 -
You want 'SimplyBroadband' then add 'anytime calls' which I think is an extra £5. However I think that is going to go up soon http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/utilities/2014/10/talk-talk-set-to-hike-prices
Plusnet might work out cheaper for you?0 -
i wonder how you stand if you pay the line rental upfront like i did,as it did make a saving.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0

Yeah, have looked at PlusNet. I think they use traffic shaping though.
Not sure it would have an impact but there's 3 of us in home with laptops, iPads, smartphones. I watch a lot of online stuff (iPlayer, YouTube) and daughter has NetFlix which she's never off.0 -

In Plusnet's case (unlike other ISPs) the traffic shaping is there for the customer's benefit, so that streaming, browsing and gaming traffic gets priority0 -
Hi Guesthouse, I'm just looking into this and seen your post
did you find out if you're required to connect the YouView box?
My Mum got an ok deal with tv, phone , broadband, while never intending to use the YouView... (I'm hoping its just an incentive to try out the service etc.).. .But I've heard TT try to charge ppl to return it if not used, even tho it's 'free'.. O_O0
