Expedia 10% off code for hotels - a tiny bit useless

As I am in the process of putting together next year's road trip around a few states in the US, I was delighted to receive an code offering me 10% off hotel bookings until the end of November 2015.
I found a good deal for a couple of nights and used the code while booking, only to discover it wasn't valid with that hotel chain.
So I checked the T & Cs to read the exclusions, and found that the code was not valid at these chains:

It would have been a lot easier for them to name the hotel where you can use the code.

Happily, if you go via Quidco you can still get 10% cashback.

Sad but true. Welcome to online rate parity at chains. Code will no doubt be valid at a lot of independent hotels, but not much comfort in the US, where 75-80% of hotels are chain-affiliated.

If you book via Topcashback/Quidco you will get 12.5% cashback, or their sister site hotels.com will probably have identical rates, 10.5% cashback.
Hotels.com also have their loyalty club where 1 in 10 rooms are free so you would get an additional 10% of the average towards a room as well as the cashback.

You'd be mad to prebook for a road trip. There is such an oversupply of rooms in the USA that this is only REALLY necessary in large cities around holiday times.

You won't save any money by prebooking so you might as well book during the day when you know where you're going to be.

It is also still just about possible to get walk in bargains, although the internet seems to have made this harder in recent years.
