I was planning to sell my car (no part exchange) and wanted to get opinion what's the best channel possible.

My situation
- Similar prices of my car is around £9700 - £11k in Autotrader
- Wewantanycar quoted £8100, webuyanycar £7700 . Reviews say they pay much less at time of selling.
- I haven't tried local resellers
- I looked into Autotrader/ebay/Gumtree options, but not sure how to handle/transfer money. I have sold cars before, but they were all less than £2000 hence , but that was handled by cash. My colleagues advice is for high amount >£8k, no one will come with cash :(

If you guys have any alternative/options/advice, it would be great
Also how to handle such amount of money even if I try to sell myself?

I've paid 9K cash for a car before, and 7K, and sold a car for 7K cash.
Brother sold one for about 14k cash I think, bought a cash counter/checker thing off ebay just to be sure.

Did the buyer come with 7k cash? or you accepted a token advance and later handled at Bank?

    Brought the money with him.
He was more concerned about logbook loans, which I'd never heard of at the time!
I can see where you're coming from, never know who's out to scam/rob you these days.

Going back a few years now but i have known people that bought houses with a briefcase full of cash.

If your happy to accept cash buyers will bring it.

Safer if they withdraw the money from your local branch or do a transfer of the funds, Bankers draft direct from the branch also.

    Dont overprice it.

I've always used Autotrader in the past but found it was a complete loss for selling my last car with no interest at all.

In contrast Ebay and Pistonheads were very good. Ebay ended up getting the buyer and was the cheapest to advertise so I'd suggest trying that first.

Autotrader suggested £8k as the asking price, I put it up for £10,500 and got £9750.

Buyer brought cash but I'd have preferred bank transfer.

I'd have thought bank transfer or cheque and you wait for it to clear were the best options.

You could take cash but I'm not sure if I'd want to be involved with such a large amount unless you did it with the involvement of a bank in some way.

If you've had offers from the We buy type websites, why not try local garages to see what they will offer you.

Those selling similar or same model/make is a good place to start.

Also less chance of any underhand or scams taking place. Money could be transfered there and then, to your bank, when you hand car over.

I think a dodgy cheque can clear and have money taken back up to 6 months later, something like that - hopefully someone could clarify.

I sold a car, and the transfer of less than £4000 was done by PayPal. I did not advertise on eBay.

Within five minutes, PayPal called the buyer to confirm the transfer was genuine, and wanted to know the nature of the transaction. It was free, as far as I know, but I presume if you do it a lot, they will want to charge you as a trader.

Ideally, you should not use the other person's computer, as they can record your password. You should be able to check the money has turned up using your own phone.

Going through eBay costs a lot, which is why you see all these dealers with zero history, and the listing is just an advert.

"Agents" will call you up, saying they have a buyer ready, you just have to pay £50 to "register" with them, and they will set the deal up. This will go on for weeks, nothing you can do.

Free websites like Gumtree cost nothing, but then NOBODY called when I advertised.

Tesco has a free advertising board, but you need to use their card, which they date, and will remove after a week or so.

Newsagents are good value. Depending on the location, they charge £1 to £2 a week for a postcard where I am.

Local newspapers are surprisingly good for generating business, but expensive. A tiny ad in a weekly can easily cost £15+. It makes sense, as who wants to drive 100 miles just to see a car.
