Holiday homes/apartments financial protection

Hi,
Tried to see if there was already a thread for this but I couldn't find anything.
I'm looking to book a holiday apartment for a trip to New York as it's much cheaper than a hotel. However, I'm worried that as these apartments are owned and you have to send the money to the owners rather than via a company what financial protection do you have if I was to turn up and the apartment didn't exist/ already had someone living there etc.
Having had a quick look into them it's my understanding that you have to pay via a transfer into the property owners account rather than pay by credit card.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks

There are parts (most) of NYC where it's illegal to let out an apartment short term.

Unless you're paying by card, you've no protection through your method of payment.0 -
It can be very tricky as there are lots of scammers around. You should ask this question on a specific New York forum like trip adviser. They will guide you to some honest places. There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.0

Except that as most short term apartment rentals in NYC are illegal, there aren't really any 'honest places' you should rent from 😉It can be very tricky as there are lots of scammers around.
