  • Yes, I have to be honest, to cover all bets in terms of getting a qualification useful for all purposes.., I'd prefer to do GCSE maths. I did ask my son's school (when he still went) if I could take an exam there and pay for it and they didn't have a clue how I'd go about booking or paying for it lol.

I really have tried over the years. But maybe I say that but actually give up too easily.

That all sounds really exciting, whether you need it or not it sounds like it will do you a world of good to just do it for yourself :)

Re old GCSEs, I'm sure I read on here somewhere that they are only valid for a few years anyway? Maybe someone else can explain the whys and wherefores.

You can do GCSEs at evening classes at an adult education centre.

You can enter as a private candidate at most colleges. You would need to check which exam board the college is with. I did have a link; as this is what I was planning on doing. Can't find it now though.:(

Whilst clearly people should be advocating lying on their CV the reality is that it is highly unlikely that anyone would ever ask the OP to produce copies of their GCSEs given that they are presumably in their 30s.

I am 33 and had to provide mine last month......but then that was because it was for a tutoring job at college ;)

OP, my students have to take the initial assessments all the time for Functional Skills maths and English, in fact almost on a daily basis as I have quite a broad range of students!

To come out at level 2 is *very* unusual - "good" students are often level 1, but most are entry level 3 on these assessments, so please do be chuffed with what you got!

Deanna - go for it. I didn't get one GCE in school (they didn't actually do them).
later in life I did an honours degree with the Open Uni and it got me 'hooked' on learning. done several courses at local colleges (which cost nothing) and have loved it. its even led to finding some brilliant part time jobs.

I wish you all the best! enjoy the new course and I bet you will soon make friends - I did.
  • I phoned my local adult education institute and she just told me to phone around the schools to find courses lol, she couldn't give me any. I've looked at the local college courses and although I know there is a big drive to get the kids through English and Maths GCSE .., it must be via equivalency courses because the college is only doing BTEC type courses, not GCSE's (no Maths GCSE listed).

I have to be honest, I don't understand how colleges work anymore, and as for funding lol. Last year I was told I couldn't do a level 3 course unless it lead directly to employment because my son was doing a level 2 course and received funding for it. Now he's doing a level 3 course.

I'd quite like to work as a classroom assistant or do teacher training (which is why I am a bit anxious about dong maths that will be accepted by education bodies as its likely I'll need to present proof to them at some point).., but you need to get experience working in a school as a volunteer. I haven't found one who'd accept me yet which surprised me. Perhaps its because of the CRB checks you have to have done, I don't know.
