Transferring private plate to a newly purchased vehicle

I just today purchased a new-to-me used car from a dealer. I want to transfer the personal plate on my current car to the new-to-me car. I haven't sent the V5C off yet.

I also need to tax and insure the new-to-me car. It's currently taxed by the old keeper, and is insured under a temporary policy till end of Saturday.

Am I able to transfer the plate immediately? Or do I Have to wait for the V5?

No, you have to complete the correct paperwork and recieve the official documents to allow use of the plate on the vehicle.

has the V5C been sent off to the DVLA for change of keeper yet?

if not then download DVLA form V317 transfer a vehicle registration fill that in and send it all off to the DVLA and expect around four weeks to turn it around

gone are the days where you could pop into the local DVLA office and get it done on the day

I've got the V5C (minus the 'selling to motor trade' section) in the old keeper's name. I've printed out a V317 as well.

So I just put both in the same envelope with a cheque for £80 and wait?

How about the V10? The car is taxed in the old keeper's name till the end of December. Apparently the keeper hasn't applied for a refund yet, he might do though. What would I fill in on the V10 for registration number?

are you planning on using the car whilst waiting for the transfer to go through ?

if you are you will have to tax it now either on line or over the phone, it will be taxed in the present registration mark that the car is showing and that will transfer to you registration mark when they process the V317

the old keeper does not need to apply for a tax refund it will be done automatically when the V5C change of keeper is processed by the DVLA

From 1 October, when you buy a vehicle, the vehicle tax will no longer be transferred with the vehicle. You will need to get new vehicle tax before you can use the vehicle.

You can tax the vehicle using the New Keeper Supplement (V5C/2) part of the vehicle registration certificate (V5C) online or by using our automated phone service - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 0300 123 4321.

Alternatively, you may wish to visit a Post Office® branch.

DVLA are unable to check the vehicle insurance details for new keepers in Northern Ireland online or by phone. If you’re a Northern Ireland new keeper, you will need to tax at a Post Office® branch that deals with vehicle tax.

if you need to tax the car locally do it with the V5C new keepers supplement before you send it off to the DVLA

what is happening the the car that the private plate is on now?

that car will have to stay on the private plate and your car will have to stay on the original plate until the transfer is complete
  • Tax the car at the Post Office using the green slip or, online using the green slip reference number (new keeper supplement V5C2) If you tax it first then you can drive the car on its current plates whilst the paperwork is being processed.

Complete the new V5 (for the new/used car) with the new keepers details, ie your name & address tick the box to say you are the new keeper & sign the right hand side. Complete the V317 & add your details as the new keeper for the new/used car (the car the plate is being transferred to). Include a current MOT for the new/used car & include a cheque for £80

I always send these recorded delivery & take copies of all documents.

    Hope that helps

Yeah looks like it's easy enough to do it online using V5C/2. I'm not really sure why the old keeper didn't declare it SORN and get his money back (it's £500/year), but anyway. https://www.taxdisc.service.gov.uk

I want to sell it - I usually keep it on the drive but that's now occupied with the new car. I can park it on the lawn for a few days. It's insured until 18th November (but I'd like it gone sooner really), so I want rid fairly quickly.

The original MOT? Will they send it back?
  • Yes, they send a copy back with the new registration number & a note saying re-issued by DVLA...

you cant really sell it until you get the paperwork back and the old car has reverted back to its original number

dont let the car go until the transfer is complete as you could potentially loose entitlement, also you wont have the V5C for your old car as this will have to go in with the V317 and will be reissued to you with the old plate on it
