Gumtree - payment method question.

Hi all, hope you are well.

I've recently put an advert up on gumtree selling some little collectables that I have. Not worth a massive amount unless you want them I guess.

One person has replied back saying that they are interested but they're the other side of the country so it'd be a massive hassle to somehow acquire them.

They've offered to send me a paypal payment of £100 (which is roughly what I was looking for) and for me to then sort a courier with that money for the smallish box of stuff to be collected from me and then sent to them.

It doesn't seem like it to me, they seem genuine but are there any concerns that I should take with this....?

Gumtree is meant to be a face to face platform. If you are happy taking Paypal, then you need to read the postage sticky at the top of this page.

Keep any receipts for 180 days at least, 6 years if you can.

I agree - garden stuff etc that is collected by person for cash I sell on Gumtree - stuff that is posted I auction on EBay - tend to find I get a better price too :-) ...... Other goes out at a Bootsale

For example one sale that makes me smile is a Next black beautiful waist coat. I couldn't seem to sell it for £2 at a Bootsale and had some woman nagging me to sell for a £1. I refused and then joined Ebay and sold it for £19 ! Buyer was from Sweden ( she paid for tracked £12 postage as well ) and was delighted ! Sent me a lovely thank you note and fab feedback !

    Hi,

I guess the buyer searched for the items I'm selling and it brought up my advert even though it's some distance away. I did try ebay but they didn't sell.

I'm happy letting them pay by paypal as it's not linked to a transaction in anyway as it's via gumtree is it not? I just assumed that they would transfer the money over by using my email address and it would just look like a B2B transfer but via paypal?

Nope, buyer has exactly the same rights on Gumtree as they do on ebay if they use PayPal. You really do need to read the postage sticky thread for advice on seller protection.

And then they send you £500 by mistake and you have to send back the extra £400 by Western Union and wait for the courier....

    Ask for bank transfer.

  • Thanks guys.

Interestingly enough, I put up an advert on a forum dedicated to the collection of these items yesterday and had some quite quick interest.

One person is interested in buying again, from the UK (their details claim) but they have a number of posts and seem well respected and well known in the forum. Thing is they're offering to pay by paypal and for me to deliver them too....?

Does the whole paypal scam thing apply if it's done by mutual acquintances on a forum...?

Paypal scam applies to anyone from total strangers to family members who only look after themselves whatever the costs.

If you cannot prove delivery to the confirmed address they will get a refund and you lose the goods and the money.

If you take paypal you need to prove delivery or accept that if anything happens you will get nothing. It will have cost you the postage to give the items away.
Must be sent to the registered address also.

Without wishing to appear rude, please remove your item from any place you have it advertised until you know how to keep yourself safe.

The fact that someone, however many forum posts etc they have, wants to pay by PayPal and get you to deliver by hand just feels dodgy. Why aren't they suggesting a nice cash transaction?

There is now anecdotal evidence that a claim for misuse of a bank card or account can be done even on a gifted payment.

Oh sorry! I did mean to say payment by paypal for me to then courier to them, not me to hand over to them in person.

I blame typing in a rush!
