Rent and Service Charge arrears due to their error with the Direct Debit

I received a statement last week from the housing association that I rent a portion of my apartment from (I am in shared ownership property and own 45% of it).
The statement said that I was in arrears by over £750 (despite having had a direct debit set up for the last year)
In February I got a letter saying that my combined rent and service charges was a little more than £195. This matches my direct debit notice and also was the monthly deduction made to my account for at least the last 7 months (exact to the penny).
It appears that (according to the recent statement) that there was an error made and that the actual total should have been £300 per month (i.e. I have been direct debited a shortfall of over £100 every month).
Does anyone have any idea where I stand? I have contacted the company a number of times and they say that I am not the only one affected (they said "you're not the only one in arrears through no fault of your own"), but now they are being evasive.
Ultimately, I have been told what I should be paying, paid it through Direct Debit (NOT just a standing order), everything I have adds, but they now tell me that there has been a shortfall and I'm in arrears!
Any advice, guidance or case law examples would be brilliant!

If it should have been paid, you owe it, whether there's been a DD error or not. But they should be giving you some time to pay, and not penalising you for it.
I'm guessing the extra sum is related to maintenance or sinking fund?0
