Buchanan Clark & Wells hassling parents
nars
My mum has received several letters from Buchanan Clark & Wells about a debt which they say refers to my husband, and that they got his address from a credit file search. He has never lived at that address but he does get some mail directed there, as we now live overseas. They say it's for an EON debt of 15 pounds, but he's never had an account with EON and we left the country 4 years ago, so I've no idea why they've all of a sudden decided he owes them money. My question is, what do I do? Just get my Mum to send the letters back saying "not known at this address" or should she contact them or should my husband contact them?

Hi nars
Sounds as if it could well be a case of mistaken identity - if your husband has a vaguely common name, these letters may simply be the result of some unsophisticated and flawed detective work by BCW.
Chances are that BCW themselves have only recently bought this "debt" from someone else, hence the sudden spate of letters. You can of course return them to sender, but speaking from experience your mum can expect further similar letters addressed to him until the matter is resolved one way or another.

Hi nars,
This sounds a bit strange, has your husband lived in a property that Eon supplied at any point?
I’d suggest your husband gives us a call so we can see what’s gone off here.
I just need to let you know, if we don’t hear from your husband we’ll continue to send letters, because we wouldn’t know not to.
I hope this helps:)

Hi nars,
This sounds a bit strange
No it doesn't.
BC&W are notorious for chasing people who having nothing to do with a debt due to their crap tracing and methods. Its not conceivable that Eon are ignorant of the incompetence of the people you pass these debts to, so please dont pretend to come over all surprised.Still rolling rolling rolling......

I'd get your husband to check his credit report as well as it may well start appearing on there. At which point he will have to write to everyone and ask them to correct it and point out it is not his debt.

You wouldn't know, not to continue sending letters, to an address that has informed you, the addressee is "NOT AT THIS ADDRESS" :huh:0 -
£15 ? my, my, are they getting short of work ?
Do you think they would settle for £10 ?:D
How many debts of less than say £50 get put through the debt collection process every year, isn't it time a little common sense was used, the cost of recovery must far out way the eventual, if any, recovery of these sums.
Sometimes companies will write off Hugh debts, for the most simplistic reasons, other times they pull out all the stops for £15.
