if you already have a pc on broadband an easy way is to buy a lan cable(if both computers have lan/ethernet ports - the dell 3000 does) and set up a home network. very cheap (a couple of quid) but sometimes complicated unless you have windows xp which sorts alot of fuss out for you.
otherwise get an adsl modem router.
good luck0 -
Remember to use quidco, the webs only cashback co-operative for a massive 4% rebate on this purchase.
Quidco is unlike other cashback sites in that it doesn't believe in referrals, so I earn nothing for giving you the above information.
This means they're able to offer maximum cashback on purchases, which is sometimes 50% more than other cashback sites.
The only thing they ask is that you donate £5 worth of your cashbacks each year to the running of the site. This is a very minor total given that you will make extra money on this purchase.
Most other cashback sites offer a 2% rebate at dell but are given a 4% debate and pocket the difference. At quidco you will get 4% so will make,
over £13 on in quidco cashback on this purchase of you will make a one off £5 payment to quidco. :T
If you use another cashback site you'll get just over £6.
Once you've paid the £5 at quidco you'll get maximum rebates on all your future purchases with no extra fees. It's fantastic!
NOTE TO MODS!
This is not really a referral post so please don't move it. I'm simply telling them how to save the most money possible on this purchase and I think they need to know otherwise they will lose out and be out of pocket. 0 -
hi,
Thanks for the replies.
What then is that ieee 1394 adapter for then?"Unhappiness is not knowing what we want, and killing ourselves to get it."Post Count: 4,111 Thanked 3,111 Times in 1,111 Posts (Actual figures as they once were))Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.0 -
ieee 1394 is a firewire connector, not normally used for networking (used mainly for video or disk backup).
If you want to connect both PC's to broadband you will need a router (or leave both on and use a x-over cable and extra network card - messy!).
What broadband supplier do you use?

e7even broadband is adsl (telephone).
You will need adsl router to use more than one PC.
See following:

Costs £40.00 inc VAT.
or buy same thing from e7even for £75.
Hope this helps

Hi Trog.
Thanks for that info.
Very appreciated.
Point of interest.
Do I need any other hardware in either machine or do they both simply plug into this router? What exactly plugs into them? I am using a BT voyager 100 Adsl modem at mo. Does this device replace my existing?

Yes - this replaces your BT voyager 100 Adsl modem.
Then just plug each PC in via a standard nework cable, something like this will do:

It probably comes with one in the box (but theyre only 50p each).
