My Parents Dog Died After Being Spayed

I was staying with my parents for a few days and during this time Portia the miniature daschund went to the vets to be spayed. She came home the same day and was quite lethargic, just sat on a cushion and if you took her outside for a wee she would just sit on the grass. Dad took her straight back to the vet and they gave her an injection (I think it was a pain killer) then sent home again. Still sat on the cushion and didn't move.

During the night, Dad really wasn't happy - I think he could tell she was dying, so phoned vet and managed to get an emergency appointment 30 miles away. Rushed her straight there and was put on a drip and heat pad. In the morning the vet phoned and said she was in a bad way and her body was shutting down. Had a phone call at 3pm to say they were going to put her to sleep.

I'm so sad and the family are in bits. She was a lovely dog, gone too soon :(

    OMG, that is AWFUL. :(

Did they say why? Or what exactly caused the death?

    How old was she?

    I am so sorry...

  • Thank you all for your kind words.

    Portia was 5.

The vet said it could have been a reaction to the anaesthetic, infection (unlikely) or she could have had an underlying condition. He said he's going to do a necropsy but not heard anything yet.

That's really sad, poor Portia. It's hard to loose a beloved pet at any time but it feels extra sad when they die so young. My thoughts are with you all xx
  • I would like to know the outcome as I never come across this before.

I am not a vet, but I have neutered literally thousands of cats/dogs and never had any die.

I would imagine that she has picked up an infection from the vets. Possibly parvo?

    It does happen.

All aneasthetic are a risk for humans as well as animals.

Our receptionist confirms that with you when arranging an appointment for an operation.

You also sign a permission form.

a friend's !!!!! died on the operating table when being spayed.

    Her heart stopped.

No previous signs of any heart problem. It was a reaction to the aneasthetic.

Her vet allowed her to be in the operating theatre when her next !!!!! was spayed. She was a midwife so did have medical experience.

I do know greyhounds can have problems with anaesthetics due to lack of body fat and the way the liver processes the drugs but don't know if that applies to dachshunds
