Laptop beeping twice every 5 minutes

Hello

Any ideas what is going on with our Laptop please?

It is HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC - Product No. F2T92EA#ABU
Windows 8.1 64 bit
Intel i5-3230M CPU 2.60 GHz
Intel(r) HD Graphics 4000
Purchased in April 2014
I have installed Libre Office, Avast and use Chrome.

Switched it on this morning, started as usual. Went on Google Chrome, Gmail, Google News, MoneySavingExpert.com and googled something on the local council's website.

It's working fine but has started "beeping" twice every 5 minutes.

I've cleared the browsing history but not cookies etc. I've restarted it and later shut it down completely. I switched it on again a short time ago.

Avast did report a threat when I clicked on an article on Google News (nothing dodgy just news) but must have blocked it as Avast "says" everything OK.

Any ideas - sorry I'm not very techie.

Dolly

Dirt/ Dust overheating dirty fans or fans not working vents blocked .
  • Thank you - I'll check now.
  • There was some dust underneath on the biggest "vent/intake". I've cleaned that and the other small vents - still beeping.

Doesn't seem hot, fan seems normal.

    Hello Dolly.

I would suggest the the couple of beeps is a warning that Maybe you CPU is beginning to overheat you need to check the tempreture of the CPU,also have you made any recent changes (Hardware or Software)

    Thank you for your reply.

    I haven't made any changes.

Being really thick, how do I check the temperature of the CPU?

Nothing is hot. The lappie is on a desk. Internet is connected by ethernet cable -wi-fi disabled.

Everything seems normal apart from the bleeps.

When I was on MSE this morning, starting approx 6.20 am, MSE said they were having "technical difficulties". I closed it.

Then there was the alert from Avast - Google News thing.

It's still doing it - bleeping twice every 5 mins.

  • Have you checked event viewer to see if there is any errors at the time of the beep?

    Problem solved:o:o:o:o:o

The circumstances are very sad but you have to see the funny side.

I came downstairs this morning (laptop shut down yesterday evening, power cable removed, lid closed) and "beep beep". I looked at my hubbie and said "it's still doing it - it's switched off". (I'm sure it had stopped doing it after switching it off).

Went to make a coffee and had a light bulb moment.

My Mom had a stroke in September and was in hospital for 3 weeks and was then transferred to a reablement place for 2 weeks. We took her Samsung mobile phone into her at the reablement home but there was hardly any credit on it so I brought it home with me and put it on top of the computer desk. It was in its box, switched off as far as I recall.

Sadly Mom passed away on Monday.

It was her Samsung phone that was beeping because it needed charging!

Thank you for the replies and I'm sorry I've wasted your time. I am soooooooooo embarrassed.

    Red-faced Dolly.

I had something similar when I bought a new multimeter.
About five minutes after using it I heard two long loud beeps which had me scrambling all over the house checking smoke alarms etc.
Turned out it was the new multimeter informing the world it was switching itself OFF to save battery power - and of course as I passed by on my hunt for the loud alarm noise it was just dead.
Wasn't till the second time I used it I found out what the noise was! Quite a relief really.

You cannot loose a lose goose.
Get it? Now use it before you lose it.
    or - Try
using it - not losing it. ;)
