Re-registering UK car in Ireland - still need UK road tax?

Hello,
My Road Tax expires on 31st October 2014. However, I am moving to Ireland on this day. I am 99% sure that I intend to stay there permanently and re-register the car. My UK insurance covers me for up to 3 months abroad and I will then insure with an Irish company.
I know legally that I should renew my road tax, however, I will not be using UK roads and I will be re-registering it within 3 months time.
Does anyone have any advice, please? I have owned the car for 4 years and it is only worth around £2,000. Therefore, I am unlikely to claim on my insurance should I have an accident.
Thank you.

If you export your car when you move then you wont need to pay UK car tax.
You should cancel your UK insurance and take out Irish insurance when you export.
You can't have it both ways.
The length of time you have owed it and the value are irrelevant, also if you hit someone else then you will have no option, they will claim off you so you should really be 100% legal."Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0 -
Hello,
Thanks for your help.
I have just looked for information on exporting it. But it is very confusing!
I will try to find out more right now.
Thank you.0 -
On 1st November you will be using a UK-registered car in Ireland. It must be taxed in the UK unless and until you register it in Ireland.
There are other conditions attached - see http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/leaflets/temporary-exemption-foreign-registered.html0 -
Ok, I'm really confused. It seems that I need to go to an NCTS centre within 7 days of exporting the car to Ireland. After inspection, VRT assessment, registration, VRT paid, I can then apply to pay Motor Tax, cancel my UK insurance and get Irish insurance. I also need to immediately undergo the National Car Test.0

I'd say it should be taxed as a UK car while registered as a UK car.
Now you can pay tax on a monthly direct debit, then cancel, which for you might be simpler than paying a year and reclaiming 11 months when you deregister, to avoid any issues with the DVLA about the change of address as well (like where they would post the cheque to).0 -
Does Ireland have a restriction, similar to the UK, preventing a resident from using a foreign-registered vehicle?
If so, then - yes - you will definitely need to register the vehicle in Ireland once you become resident there. Just send the purple V5C/4 slip to Swansea, to de-register it here, then you're no longer liable for UK tax. The Irish authorities will almost certainly want the main bit of the V5C in order to register it there, which you WILL need to do before it can legally be used.0 -
Hello,
Thanks for all your suggestions. Obviously I know the UK side of things, but I was seeking clarification of the Irish process. I'm now liaising directly with the Irish Revenue Commissioners and will follow their instructions.

Is there? What about all the british truck drivers driving lorries on foreign plates over here?
I thought it was legal but practically impossible to just borrow your friend's car on foreign plates, given that no UK insurance company will cover you and you'd have to be a named driver on the foreign police.0 -

....
I believe that is an EU requirement. It certainly applies to residents in Spain. Although many are not aware (cough) of the regulation."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

I feel that Cool Chick in her desire to not pay a months UK VED is giving herself a difficult schedule in that she need to rush around doing things absolutely asap.
If she renewed/paid the VED as normal she could do all the paperwork at leisure.
Nobody is expected to become a resident and re-register their car immediately upon moving to another country,0
