DVD Recordings

We have a Sony hard disk drive DVD recorder and use the hard drive for most recordings.
Recently I recorded a few programmes onto a DVD (RW –R) for a friend but even though I could watch the DVD they couldn’t see it on their DVD or their computer. So I copied the recording back to my hard drive and then onto one of their DVD’s (can’t remember what type that was) – but they still couldn’t watch it.
I’ve since been told that if a DVD is recorded from a recordable DVD that it can only be watched on another DVD recorder. Does anyone know if this is right?
Is it something to do with finalizing the DVD and/or recording mode? I’m a bit of a dummy where that is concerned so if someone can give me an idiots guide I’d be grateful….

    Hi,

Some dvd players will not recognise rw discs, this is also true for cd players if you are using cd-rw's so that could be the 1st issue.

Also for the disc to be read on your friends dvd player it would need to be finalised or they will not be able to watch the disc on their player.

    all the best

Most DVD + RW discs dont need to be finalized so try one of those. I record onto these and my daughter watches then with no problems on her cheapo Alba DVD player.
