my Samsung 840 evo has died after just 7 months. I returned it to the seller who confirmed it was dead a week ago, I have phoned several times, told me a replacement was in stock and would be processed in a couple of days. Now they are waiting for stock. can I get a refund or an alternative?

You can ask but generally the merchant has the right to decide the method of dealing with a faulty item once its been accepted (ie you dont send it back as faulty with in a few days of buying it).
Only if the delay is going to be unreasonable is there really any way to put pressure on them to change their method of resolution0
