Query as first credit card

i have a query about credit cards, i've been looking into getting one now for a while as when i went to get a contract from O2 i was told i couldn't complete due to my credit score. I am 24 and have been working full time since i was 16, i am no longer working as i have started university to train to be paramedic.
The crux of my question is, is it sensible for me to get a credit card and if so, are there any that someone would recommend? I would just be using it on small purchases, therefore be able to pay back on time each month, maybe even being periods of inactivity. I currently bank with santander and lloyds, but none of their cards seem to suit my needs. Just want to improve my credit score for the future (despite my student loans obviously hindering that).

If you are a student it would be best to apply for a student credit card with your bank. Unless you have a source of income many banks won't considered you.

If you just want to build your credit record it doesn't really matter what the type is, as long as it's free and you pay in full every month.
