Replace part ex with cash on new car

Ordered a new car £250 deposit, signed paper work and all gone through. Got an ok part ex for my car, and is listed on my order form as part ex £4000. However a mate of mine has offered me £4500 this evening, and he's ok that its out of warranty and knows about the airbag incident.

Would i be able to approach citroen and offer them £4000 in cash instead? If not, even cancelling the order (its for a popular model so definitely won't be sat on the forecourt) i'll still save £250.

Would i be best to come clean to the dealer and say i've changed my mind about part ex, or come up with some excuse?

  • I imagine the dealer would bite your hand off for the cash instead of a trade in, it's always been my experience that they'd rather not have to deal with the part ex'd cars
  • If the cars over three years old odds on it's going straight to auction. They'd rather have four grand than your car I my guess.

Its a 5 yr old toyota iq, immaculate condition, 39000, leather and 1.33, WBAC valued it at £4200 which was my min aim, but new car has 12 week lead time so allowed £200 in depreciation.

I haggled £1000 off cost of car, which was only a few hundred quid more than drive the deal, i just didn't want citroen to say 'no' and then i either have to forfeit the deposit or 'lose' £500 in value, especislly as they're likely to stick mine up at £5495 and probably get £5k for it

I'd just ring and ask if they would take the cash as you've had a better offer - worst case they say no.

As said, call them and ask. Just remember they will suck their teeth, talk about an admin cost and eventually replace the TI with £4500.

Aye, in which case I'll be better off cancelling the order and going straight to DtD.

Sounds like the sales person inflated the new car discount by reducing the part exchange value as is common, their job is to weigh up how to get the customer to sign a deal and whether they are more focused on the discount or Part Ex. If the discount is substantially more than dtd on a newly released car (I take it from other posts it is a Cactus) then this is likely to be the case

If so it's unlikely they will take £4K cash, if you push hard you might be able to equal the dtd price and not have to place a fresh order

p.s. Fab car - Love mine!

The discount is less than DtD, they would give £1500 off list, I got £1000 plus a tank of fuel from dealer - was happy with this as DtD don't take part ex. Just rang dealer and sales bloke is on an appointment at moment.
I'd never heard of a cactus till a few weeks ago, had been looking at 1-2 yr old CT's, auris's and amperas, just assumed it would be a jacked up c4 and therefore crap, but it rides like a magic carpet, and those seats are the comfiest I've ever sat in. I've not seen any on the road yet, and got some wierd looks on the test drive, presume its because they lent me a bright effing yellow one, as if it doesn't stand out enough anyway! What colour combo you go for?

    (Ps, I'm not darkmatter)
  • There's two new white ones round the corner from me (his and hers), they look fantastic. Great choice and should hold their value like the DS range.

When I see them I just want to go the beach.

Sorry, thought from your earlier post you were getting a larger discount than dtd were offering

Mines white with brown bumps (110 petrol). Originally was going to go for the yellow but it's a bit green for me. As well as the yellow demo car, have seen grey with black bumps, black with dark grey bumps and black with light grey bumps at the dealers. The different colour combos do give them different characters!
