Handbrake not responding on Windows 8.1

After doing a complete reinstall of Windows 8 onto a new SSD, I downloaded handbrake to compress some videos and it worked well. After upgrading to Windows 8.1, Handbrake has stopped working. When I try to open Handbrake, it says that 'Handbrake has stopped working' and asks me to close program.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Appears to be a known problem if you google it. Time to try a different software

I Googled it but couldn't find anything.

I use MakeMKV to rip my DVDs and Handbrake to compress the .mkv files. The only known problem I can find is with copyright protection if you are trying to rip a DVD using Handbrake.

Can anyone suggest an alternative to Handbrake to only compress the video (.mkv) file?

I've tried looking for alternatives to Handbrake, but the programs I've found are for ripping from DVD and won't just compress the .mkv file.

I'm using Handbrake (0.9.9) on Windows 8.1, and am not having any problems, so it may be worth re-installing Handbrake?
