Wifi to 120 feet away

Have a friend that wants to connect two buildings cheaply. The buildings are opposite one another, but about 120 feet apart across a road.

They want a really cheap and easy solution. The only thing i can think of is a wall wifi extender perched on the upstairs using a 4-way adapter on the window that points to the computer in the other building across the road.

Anybody done this successfully with cheap equipment?

WiFi ought to reach 120 feet anyway.

    Otherwise, it's Pringles Time.
  • Yep, Pringles can will do it. Otherwise you need directional antenna on your wireless routers. On my crappy Netgear I could change the antenna.

Thanks guys. I was thinking about this

Have to admit the first think that came to mind was a laser link, but could not find anything cheap on ebay, then a 5 gig link :)

I will not be eating Pringles any time soon. Gratitude has a very short life, while ingratitude seems to go on forever.

Currently there is a yagi there and during the day is great, but in the eve the signal drops to unusable. Think it is jammed by an alarm?
  • I hate to be the spoiler on this but are you sure it's legal? I only ask because I know Sky regard sharing their output with next door as fraud.

It won't be fraud, possibly against the terms of the service (which will be civil), but not fraud:).

I'd also suspect that most ISP's would struggle to spot it happening even if it is against the TOS, as many people let friends use their wifi when they visit, or have wifi pointed to their shed/garage, or have multiple wifi devices themselves.

Not even Civil, TOS breach will only ever result in possible termination of your service and a bill for the remainder of the contract. However, as you say, doubtful they will even notice in the world of unlimited....;)

How do Sky regard my outbuildings (as if I care).
It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.
