Clarity/Aqua applications

I've been turned down for both these cards a few times, applying a several months apart. As I have no credit card debt on the two cards I have, I wonder if they are not keen to take on customers who will pay off the cards, given that the foreign transactions (my only reason for applying) are a good deal, and probably a loss leader? Also, they say they use Experian to make their decisions. I know that Experian's credit rating should be taken with a pinch of salt (I score 986) but there has been no trace of any searches from these companies, whereas there has been for mortgage/mobile phones etc.

Anyone else in a similar situation? I'm reminded that Egg dumped a lot of their customers a few years back who paid off their balances monthly, claiming they were a 'risk'... so I think 'risk' for credit cards maybe also includes customers who won't rack up a lot of debt...

  • I've always paid off my credit cards in full every month, and I was recently accepted for a Clarity card.

Are you on the electoral roll? Do you have any other outstanding debts?
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.

Halifax Clarity and Aqua are world's apart with regards to credit scoring requirements.

Do you have any defaults? Late payments? Too many credit searches?
  • No debts, defaults etc.- on electoral roll. As I mentioned, Experian haven't shown any searches, that puzzles me. In the process of buying a property (no problem getting mortgage) so will try again once I own rather than rent.

Maybe good to check Equifax and CallCredit to see if they've searched them.
