First Time Buyers - Manchester - suggestions?

Hi!
Me and my husband are First Time Buyers looking to purchase our first house together in Manchester. We have lived in Salford Quays for 4 years now and love it but renting is really starting to seem like a waste of money (currently paying £850pcm for a two bedroom apartment)!
Ideally we would like to live in South Manchester (we love Altrincham, Sale and Didsbury for example) due to easy access to work (husband works in Altrincham and I work at MRI) and we have a budget of up to £180,000. We both love houses with character, period properties with old fireplaces etc. and would ideally want 3 bedrooms (or 2 with potential to extend) - are we being completely unrealistic??
Any suggestions on areas to look at would be really appreciated, although we've lived in the area for 4 years we don't really have a grasp on the bad/good areas!
Thanks guys for what I know will be helpful advice as usual

I used to live in Didsbury - I cant see you getting much there for £180k.You might get something on the outer edges (withington/burnage etc) but they are most likely going to be ex council semis with original fireplaces being those classy things from the 60s rather than a large victorian semi with the fireplaces your thinking of.
Sale is more likely and potentially Heaton Mersey/Heaton moor? Heaton Moor was full of cafes/bars and quite nice last time I went (personally I think Didsbury isnt what it used to be).
Its worth looking though, you might get lucky and there could be a property that needs a bit of tarting up on for a song.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it.
