  • In all honesty kaya it said it was eligible on the estate agents particulars and I just googled my council's name and 'empty homes scheme' and the information and form was the first thing that came up!

Are you 110% sure you will qualify?
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

I just thought I would update this thread (I know its been a while!)

This property did end up being the one for us and we completed last friday. My partner and I are now proud owners of our little 3 bed semi.

We eventually heard from the council and it turns out the sellers lied about not having tennants for the last 6 months so no grant (:( and an ongoing fraud investigation for them:A) Ironically, it has now been 6 months and we are back on the waiting list should they reopen the scheme.

The boiler is still intact (warm winter) - the survey suggested that the piping to it was narrower than the recommended specs and so we have replaced the pipes and lagged them too, just to be on the safe side, but for the time being it is staying in the attic. (The need to re-render and retie was a bit unexpected, eating up quite a large part of our budget, but the electrics are in a better state than we thought) My partner has gotten it into his head that the old boiler cupboard can become a 'server room'!

We used the last of the electric meter money emptying the washing machine (which had been turned off mid cycle!). They have left us 2 beds, a dining table, a fridgefreezer and said washing machine. Funnily enough, they tried to get us to buy the remaining contents for £250 and all they removed was 1 wardrobe, leaving the rest for us to deal with... so saving us from having to buy white goods at least!

So next job is changing the evil prepay meters so we can have both gas *and* electricity at reasonable prices!

I'd be wanting to relocate it anyway - whoever wants to go into the attic if there's a problem, or suspected problem, or clock that needs resetting, or something, on the boiler. Daft place for it

In my opinion, not daft at all.

In fact our plumber and architect suggested it. I will be having an area in the loft (bungalow with huge loft space) that will house:

    ISP wireless router
    CCTV recorder/control
    Sonos sound amps
TV aerial amp and splitter leading to all rooms
Condensing boiler for central heating and hot water
Separate boiler and pressurised tank to feed pumped showers

There will be a concealed door in a splayed velux opening with folding loft ladder for easy access.

I have been in our current property for 28 years, and apart from its annual service, I cannot remember the last time I needed access to the boiler....
20 plus years as a mortgage adviser for Halifax (have now retired), and I have pretty much seen it all....:D
