Tuesday 28 October - What small DFW things will you do today?

When we start out on the DFW trail we do loads of "big stuff" that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the gym .

But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free, or staying debt free.

Examples could be hanging washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending.

So be proud of those small steps, they really are important

  • Today I have left my card at home, so I'm not tempted to use it. Only the cash in my purse with me, which should do me good as Tuesday is traditionally a day I end up overspending!

Savvy Shopper! I've been Money Tipped!
    Hi Gang

Today I have taken advantage of the glorious sunshine & hung out a large load of washing to dry. I am so delighted that we are having this late sun, it really makes me happy.
I have walked my son to a play date instead of using the bus, then walked home again, & will walk back in an hour. Saving around £4
I went to Sainsburys and spent the £2.17 price match voucher I found yesterday, it paid for 2 packs of fishfingers & a bag of chips for a freezer meal dinner.
Have checked my banking & sent ANOTHER email to the insurance loss adjustor nagging for the funds I am owed. They really know how to make you feel like crap, begging cap in hand for what they LEGALLY owe you. Grr...
Our car that we listed on ebay yesterday after Gumtree was utterly useless (loads of offers but no one getting back to us when we contacted them, is that normal?) has 11 watchers, with the auction ending on saturday. We've put instant payment only on it so we wont get any further time wasters. We have listed it for £350 but if it doesnt sell we'll be booking it in for scrap removal which will be £150 so thats the min we'll get back.
Music Magpie did not turn up yesterday for our parcel which is annoying as they take forever to pay out as it is and £25 would really help the coffers (well £12.50 once I split it with my son as they were his DVDs
Am also awaiting a cheque for £32 which was sent to me in my maiden name & I had to send proof of my new (8 years old) married name before they could reissue it. Again I'd like them to hurry up & resend my money!
First Utility are doing something weird with my bill, having just had the lovely rebate of £247 & spending a long time clarifying with the agent our actual usage which she said was £65, and setting our DD at £70 to cover any additional charges, I submitted my readings today & see we are now £101 in debit, which is weird so Im now going to ring them. It must be wrong. Cant see how we could have used an additional £36 in energy in such a short time. We havent put the heating on or anything like that...
Went to the library, got a film out using DVD reward points & more library books for my son.
    Think thats it for now!
    Bye all.
    Bob

    Debt-free and Proud!
Afternoon all! Thanks to those posting so far.

Today will be a spend day for me. Payday, so off to the shops, with my list. I intend to go to Morrisons today, as I have a cashback offer with my debit card. Kind of goes against the plan of paying with cash this month, but I think it's worth it for the cashback.

I've started using my budgeting / tracking spends app. It's good to know how much cash I actually have once everything comes out. And I've paid £200 towards the card, and have topped up my overdraft fund to £700.

Also updated my signature to reflect this... aah that feels good!

And... I've had my payrise signed off so I feel pretty good right now! Extra money will all go towards paying off the overdraft, then card, then savings.

Having just rang First Utility the issue is still going back to a disputed gas reading in Feb of last year. Was just having a good discussion with a helpful man & all of a sudden he couldnt hear me at my end then we got cut off! He said that our last company EDF would have billed us right up until our end read which if it was incorrect would mean we have overpaid them. I have had this discussion over & over with EDF because they did indeed present us with a final bill for £247 despite the fact I'd been paying them £88 per month and been reassured that was covering our usage. But every time I ring them and ask they say they havent overcharged us.
Now back on hold again to First Utility! But 20 in the queue and I have to go out in less than 10 mins.
    Grrr...

You have my sympathies Bobarella - it is so frustrating dealing with these companies isn't it?

    So far today I have:
Made 2 phone calls to 2 different banks. One at least was helpful, the other not so much :( This small issue has been ongoing for over a year, on and off  I wonder if they would be any keener to sort it out if it were about their money rather than mine?

Carried business stock up to the top floor of the house ready to be put away - free exercise!

Continued to sort out bank paperwork, nearly there now :T

    Washing drying on line

Walked to town, had hair cut and picked up a few bits that I needed while I was out

Popped into sales unit with a couple of small things. A large item has sold - hooray, that has freed up some space :T

Checked ebay sales (nothing exciting, just clothes I don't wear any more) and one item has 5 watchers and the other has a bid :D

    Still to do:
    Finish banking paperwork marathon :(Done:T
Put business stock away so that the spare bedroom doesn't look like a junk shop This might have to be one of tomorrow's tasks :o
Dream up something for supper - a big main course soup with the rest of the bacon hock and all the veg from the bottom of the fridge I think :)Soup it was, very nice too:)

Also did a survey for Yougov and went through the banking stuff with OH. Talk about in one ear and out of the other though :rotfl:

Just had an email to let me know that my little trees will be arriving tomorrow, so huge garden excitement :D

Hope everyone is having a good day :)

Isnt it just! And finally got a reply out of the insurance wallies. Offering me half of what they owe me. I said, er well no. Why should I?
You are quite right in what you say, they would be far more antsy if it was their money!

On a less fractious note, was rather chuffed to have Harry Wallop the personal finance journo (you may have seen him on Super Scrimpers?) start following me on Twitter yesterday. I told Mr Bob, who somewhat sarcastically said " oh good, you can get together & talk about counting your pennies together.":rotfl::T Who needs Brad Pitt;)

    Evening all,
Busy day today, barely applied bum to chair but then got a phone call to tell me I won that cookery competition! How nice was that?! £50 of shopping vouchers & got to go & get my photo taken in store this week. Good job I did my manky roots!!
*Dried laundry outside in lovely sunshine.
*Dug leeks, cut courgettes & herbs.
    *Made bread rolls for freezer.
*Made stew with the last of the rubber pork.
*Made lamb stew in the slow cooker. Waitrose stewing lamb £2.50 a lb. Will freeze & take out the day we go on holiday for meal that night at the cottage......should keep us out of the pub!
*Made lentil & butternut squash curry using home grown butternut. Hairy Bikers recipe & it's yum (Hairy Bikers not so bad either!) Will freeze half of it for a 'free' dinner another time.
    *Wrapped 3 ebay parcels.
    *Did a couple of surveys.
*Checked online banking to see if a cheque has landed yet. Nope!
*Saved a bit more energy by sharing bath tub, letting my hair dry naturally & not having any heating on.
*Baked some jammy buns (tried out my home made pear & blackberry jam......pears from our tree & bramble poking through from next door - very autumny flavour, must remember to make again next year).
    Have a nice evening, everyone.
