Renting in Scotland, council tax enquiry

Hi all, first time post but been viewing for a few years.

I'm a student in glasgow who's just moved in to a rented flat with my girlfriend, however it's just myself on the lease. She has just finished studying in France and is looking for a job in glasgow.

I'm the only one who's received a council tax bill but obviously i get exemption.

I'm wondering do we need to let the council know she is living here and she'd then be liable for paying council tax with the 25% reduction from living with a student?

Thank you

  • Yes you need to declare it.
  • What makey says:

    According to Glasgow council website
    http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=5500
cohabiting couples are jointly liable for the council tax.

So yes you are exempt: But she is liable for CT (but entitled to single-person discount
    http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=5985
) - and if Glasgow's website is correct if it ain;t paid you are both responsible for paying it: weird. Are they right?

You say you have had the bill but get exemption: Have you applied & got the exemption??

Hope you are very happy together,
  • Thanks for that guys,

I'm pretty sure any full time student is not responsible for paying council tax?

Yeah i have applied through my institution and on the council's online exemption form, will phone them up to sort the rest out.

    Thanks for confirmation!!

If you're the person on the tenancy agreement then I'd expect you to be responsible for any CT liability - just because you personally are exempt from paying doesn't mean that you're not responsible for paying what is owed by the occupants of the property in total. If you don't pay it they will come after you, so getting it sorted out now is the right thing today. Whether your girlfriend hands the whole lot (less the 25% discount) to you or you make a contribution yourself is something you need to resolve between the two of you.
