Living without a oven?

You don't say what's wrong with the oven. If it's just the element it will probably cost the same if not less than buying a mini oven and is easy to do yourself.
I couldn't live without mine, I enjoy baking and roast to much and I'm not overkeen on slow cooker food either.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

I agree - roast meat is lovely in the slow cooker, you can easily do chicken, beef, lamb and pork in there.
However, your oven may be an easy fix depending on the model. If the light/fan are still on, it's likely to be the element. If these are off, it could be the thermostat. A repair man shouldn't cost more than £60 with parts, or if you google the make and model perhaps other people with the same issue have sorted it out.0 -
Our fan oven trips the rcd every time it's turned on, sometimes 5 times before it works, and we've been told it's likely to cost a lot and damage the kitchen to repair, so we bought the Aldi halogen oven for £30 on Friday.
So far I've cooked:potato wedges, soda bread, roast potatoes and sausages and have been pretty happy.
I am planning Christmas already - it came with the extender ring so reckon could do a turkey crown no probs - just be a bit of a juggling act. Only thing is few of our oven tins fit so need to get new round ones to make use of space, and cooming things like pizzas and chips for all 5 of us at once going to be hard.
Still though, much happier I bought this than shelled out £100s for our old oven - am amazed at how much more quickly things cook .:eek::eek: LBM 11/05/2010 - WE DID IT - DMP of £62000 paid off in 7 years:jDFD April20170 -
I lived without an oven for a year at uni. Can't say it was great TBH but you can do it. The biggest thing is that you won't be able to bake. You could make most casseroles and lasagna/pasta bakes in a slow cooker I suppose and, when using the hob for cooking, a wok and stir frys are your friend.
Best cakes i've made have been in the slow cooker it also makes a mean focaccia bread we rarely use the main oven usually christmas (I've never gotten on with it) but I do have an actifry (That I wouldn't bother with another one when it dies) a mini oven 2 slow cookers and a electric teppanyaki griddle (best £20 spent ever)0 -
We went quite a while without an oven and although we replaced it eventually we did well without it.
We have one of the old style remoskas and I use that most of the time. It makes a mean cake and I can cook a whole chicken in there for a Sunday dinner with the veggies either microwaved or steamed and mash done on the hob.
We have a microwave combi oven too but we very rarely use the oven part just the microwave, too much fiddly cleaning for me when i can just put the remoska dish in the dishwasher.
We went several months altogether cooking this way and got so used to it that most of the time we don't use the big oven now.
SDPlanning on starting the GC again soon0 -
How about the remouska. I never use my oven now. Its far too expensive to run.0

A Remoska costs £150+, a mini oven costs £30 - and you can see stuff cooking through the glass. I know which I'd find most natural and value for money.0

If you have your hob and microwave its amazing what you can do sometimes you just need to cook something in advance heat in the microwave and use your hob to do the other things ( IYSWIM)
Do you have a separate grill on your oven or was it in the oven part?
My oven got damaged in a move and on principle i didn't get it fixed till the company agreed to pay for it.( about five weeks) I did however use my steamer and sandwich toaster sometimes.0 -
Just wanted to say thanks for this thread.
There's only two of us at home and I often ended up having the whole oven on just for a couple of frozen pies or something.
Never even considered a 'mini oven' - didn't even know you could still get them - haven't seen one since the 'Baby Belling' I had in my first bedsit back in the eighties
Will be getting one now and hopefully saving a lot of electric
Thanks guys!Don’t try to keep up with the Jones’s. They are broke!0 -
I have had a Remoska for about 5 years and used it just about every day, in fact it has just given up the ghost probably just worn out. Just got a Tefal Roast & Bake which us essentially the same.
This and a slow cooker cover 99% of what we need.0
