Quick question about accounts which require DDs

Hi all,

Quick question I'm hoping someone can answer.

If I want to open an account which requires say a minimum of two direct debits setup - can I simply pass on the direct debits for credit cards that I seldom use?

For example - a halifax clarity direct debit which I only use on holiday so most months it will withdraw nothing from the account I setup?

Many thanks!

This depends - read the T&C.

In most cases such accounts (e.g. Santander 123) require just 'active' DDs, i.e. you just have to make sure that the DD doesn't expire because of inactivity, that takes at least 13 months.

However, IIRC, there was some account that required the DDs to be taken every month.

If you're wanting interest on a Club Lloyds account or a £5 reward from a Halifax Reward Account then you need the 2 Direct Debits to be paid each month.

If you've got a Clarity Card, why not just make a small purchase from it every month and then have the DD take the full amount?

The easiest way to overcome this problem is to open two Tesco savings accounts. They have two slightly different named ones. Then you can use these to pull money from your current accounts. In other words you set up dd mandates on the Tesco accounts to pull funds from your current accounts that require dd mandates each month. Job done.
