Nationwide Card Compromised

My Mother received a brand new Nationwide Visa card today. As her card was renewed a couple of months ago this was unexpected.
The letter with it stated that they had reason to believe the card no. had been compromised. They said no need to worry as no suspicious transactions had been noticed. They also asked her not to call them.
After the letter with new card had been issued but before it arrived she made an online purchase of several hundred pounds on the old card without difficulty which seems very odd that they allowed this unusual purchase without reference to her!
Anybody got a theory what's happened?

Old cards tend to work for a short period.
I would call Nationwide and check the card is genuine. It could be an elaborate phishing attempt. Unlikely a bank would say it was compromised but discourage a phone call ....
Call the number on Google or a bank statement, not the number on the letter (in case it's fake and they glean all the security info during the call)0
