Scottish Power £4000 energy bill mistake

Options
Background: I moved into this property around June/July. Landlord didn't provide us with any initial meter readings and we forgot to take them so when I registered they said they would estimate from our move-in date however when I took the meter readings I made a mistake: I didn't realise it was 2 rate electricity meter so I only gave them the first rate.

Fast forward today and I was expecting a bill, it never came so I rang up and they asked for the meter readings, this is when I saw the button to cycle the display to view both meter readings; I accept that I am a massive idiot for not realising this sooner, what I do not accept is the £4000 bill.

On Scottish Power they are saying that my electricity consumption (gas appears to be fine) is around 30000 which is roughly ten times the national annual average consumption.

What I believe to have happened is that a new meter has been installed (there is a new installation sticker on the meter stating the last figures which is around the 80k mark) and Scottish Power were never informed of this so for my initial second rate they took the last value they had (80k~ on the old meter) and calculated it against my new meter readings and assumed it rolled over after maxing out at 99999.

After she stated the figure I said that has to be a mistake and she arranged a meter reading for the 13th of November and will lock the account so that it won't be taken to collections until then but I am terrified, I am stressing that my energy is going to shut off or that bailiffs are going to come round.

To make matters worse they have ridiculous hold times and a callback service that is incredibly tempermental. What do I do?
