Blank screen on boot up, but then...

For the last week or so, whenever I boot up I always get a blank screen (even after a few minutes when fully booted). If I turn the monitor off and then on again I can see the screen content, but it will go blank again after about 2 seconds. I'll then do a reboot and all is well.

Initially I thought it was the video card, but I'm not so sure now. Any ideas?

If it's a fairly new graphics card, have you made sure it's seated properly?
Also, I would check the connecting cables to make sure they're fully plugged in as well.

The graphics card is over 2 years old now (upgraded). I have checked the cables - it's same each time: 1st boot = blank screen; then reset and all is well.
